Making a Legacy Gift to WHRB
WHRB has benefited throughout its history from the generosity of alumni (“ghosts”) and listeners who have given in honor of the experience they gained and friends they made at the station. In recent years several ghosts have chosen to include WHRB in their estate plans, leaving either a percentage of their estate or an outright amount.
These bequests, and all gifts of $50,000 or more, are deposited into an account managed by the trustees of the station and not directly accessible to the undergraduate staff. Such funds are retained for capital needs and other improvements or to address emergencies. The day-to-day expenses of WHRB are, to the greatest extent possible, covered by advertising income. (During 2020-21, as advertisers waited out the pandemic, ghost and listener gifts provided extraordinary support so that WHRB could continue broadcasting.)
Unrestricted bequests are welcome. To include WHRB as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, a charitable trust, an annuity, or other planned gift vehicle, we ask that you consult your financial advisor. Sample language for a bequest to WHRB is as follows:
I give (____ dollars or ___ percent of my estate) to Harvard Radio Broadcasting Co., Inc., with a principal office located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, tax I.D. #04-6066702, or a successor organization thereto so long as such organization qualifies as a charitable organization under 501(c)(3) of the Code, to be used in support of its general purposes.
Unrestricted gifts are of most use to the station. Any restrictions on bequests or other planned gifts must be discussed in advance with the trustees, who reserve the right to refuse any gift that does not meet the station’s needs.
